Ponding water adds structural load, accelerates roofing system deterioration, and — in bad enough situations — can contribute to roof collapse. When debris packs into a valley, water backs up rather than draining cleanly off the edge. That backed-up water sits against the roofing material, works under shingles, and finds its way into the structure. Valleys are one of the first places a roof cleaning should address.
Some ponding immediately after rain is normal and will clear within 24–48 hours. Ponding that persists longer than that, or keeps recurring in the same spot, points to a drainage issue, whether that's a blocked drain, debris accumulation, or a low point in the roof surface. Persistent ponding accelerates wear on the roofing membrane and adds structural load the roof wasn't designed to carry long-term.
A few things to look for: gutters that overflow during rain even when they appear clear at ground level, debris visible in the valleys from the ground or an upstairs window, water staining on the fascia or soffit, and moss or organic growth on the roof surface. Any of those suggest that service is needed.
